Exercising After Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Wisdom tooth extractions are fairly common dental procedures. If everything is in order, you can expect to be out of the dentist's office in less than one hour. Even when the tooth is impacted, the treatment is usually straightforward.

Although wisdom tooth extractions aren't complex procedures, you still need to give your body enough time to rest.

How much time to be more precise?

Keep reading to find out when you can start exercising after wisdom tooth extractions.

Why Your Body Needs Time to Heal After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

After the wisdom tooth has been extracted, it leaves a socket in the bone. This socket will eventually fill with new bone tissue, but this process takes time.

In the meantime, a blood clot forms in the socket to protect the bone and nerve endings and help the area to heal. Intense physical activity can disturb the blood clot and lead to a painful complication known as a dry socket.

You should also think about it this way. Your body went through trauma (minor, of course, but it still mobilized cells to the extraction site to promote healing and protect against a potential infection.) Your body is under stress now and it needs time to heal and recover.

When Can You Start Exercising After a Tooth Extraction?

Here at Glen Valley Dentistry, we usually tell our patients to take it easy for the first two-three days after wisdom tooth extraction. Going back to the gym too soon or engaging in strenuous exercise could lead to increased bleeding and swelling. It can also affect the blood clot, which, in turn, could delay the healing process.

As a general rule, you should just rest on the day of the procedure. If possible, we also advise our patients to take the day off.

If you feel the need to move your body, you can do some light physical activity, such as walking, one or two days after the extraction.

As your body heals, you can gradually introduce more intense exercises into your routine. Make sure to always start slow and listen to your body.

You should be able to return to regular physical activity one week after the extraction, provided you've had no complications.
